Based on Psalm 69, John 2, John 1:28 + 35-39, 2 Chronicles 5, Behold Him was made during a live worship night with the theme “Behold the Lamb”. As I read these scriptures, Jesus' battered chest, his nearly unrecognizable face, and pierced side would not leave my mind. After the canvas was prepped and the scriptures were written out, I realized I made the rookie mistake (which never happens!) of leaving my white paint at home. My technique had to change. Instead of muted tones and thin layers, I had to pack on the paint to create texture and would use my brush cleaning solvent to bring light back to the piece. This “coincidence” ministered so deeply to me. Not even titanium white paint could remove the stain of sin, only the blood of a spotless Lamb. By the time this revelation hit my heart, I decided to use the solvent to create a crown above the figure of Jesus and bring light out of his pierced side. This is a picture of victory and a holiness we can barely fathom.
