I created this piece to honor the women in my family. From bottom to top, you’ll see me being cared for by my grandmother, who I call Mama (though you might know her as Doña Ana Virginia). Above her is my mom, taking care of Mama. And at the very top is my late great-grandmother, caring for my mom.
 
Mama came to the U.S. with her brothers while my mom and her little sisters, still very young, were looked after by her grandmother. It took several years of sacrifice and hard work before Mama was able to bring her daughters to the U.S. In my life, I’ve watched my mom take on the role of caretaker for many—but especially for Mama. While my mom worked hard every day, Mama was the one who got me ready for school, brushed my hair with Ultra Sheen, told me I was using too much hot water in the shower, and looked after me with so much love. This painting shows my Mama’s mama, my mama, and her mama. I love them deeply.
