This painting is based on Psalm 34, 1 John 2:26–28, and 1 John 3:1–3. As I wrote out the scriptures, I kept returning to this promise, "those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces will never be ashamed." What you look at is not ruled by your external environment but who your heart is set on. That will transform you. 1 John tells us that when He appears, we will be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is — the posture of watching transforms the one who watches. This piece is for every person who has ever turned their gaze toward Jesus, whether it was twenty years ago or for the very first time today. Every word in the scriptures I reflected on while making this piece is a promise for the believer to hope in. You might see this piece and see a person who’s suffered affliction or seems weary. But if you look at the iris of their eye, there’s a dove and cross because those who look to Him are radiant.
